Water, energy and food are inextricably linked. Water is needed for agriculture and energy is required to produce and distribute water & food.
In the GCC, water, energy and food are all used intensively. The region has the largest oil and gas fields in the world. The urge for diversification is however growing. The region belongs to the most water-scarce hyper-arid regions in the world, but ironically is also among the largest water-consuming areas in the world. This puts a huge strain on resources. Agriculture is by far the largest water consumer in the GCC. It consumes approximately 85% of fresh water, almost uniquely coming from non-renewable underground sources. The production of sweet water is highly energy-consuming and distribution water for agriculture is an important part of the energy bill. If anywhere in the world the water, energy and food resources are intrinsically linked, it’s in the GCC. Only an integrated approach both within and amongst countries will allow for sustainable solutions to solve the problems of this nexus. Dutch companies and knowledge institutes have the knowledge and expertise to provide these solutions .The water, energy and food nexus was therefore also chosen as the theme for the Dutch pavilion at the World EXPO in Dubai in 2020.
The Dutch Government has asked Ernst & Young to contextualizing the current state of the Water Energy and Food Nexus in the UAE and to identify the business opportunities for Dutch companies in the area of the nexus. The results of this report will be presented at our next Monthly Network Event. Furthermore, the Dutch Company ‘Grow Arabic’ will give an insight in the developments within ‘Vertical Farming’.
