In the US the equity markets are setting new records and economic growth seems to be continuing at a high pace despite the threats of a trade war that would certainly impact the world economy negatively. In other markets the picture is more diverse with Brexit and concerns about Italy rattling the European markets and let not forget the concerns regarding the very high and increasing leverage due to the prevailing low interest rates that is creating asset value bubbles in various sectors. And it is still very unclear what the end of quantitative easing and higher interest rates will do to economic growth. The increase of oil prices have had a positive impact for the Gulf Region but the signals mixed. Top line economic growth in the UAE remains positive but many different views are heard about the real state of the economy and the prospects for the short term. The recently announced new visa rules have been explained as a response by the government to stimulate investment and hence growth in particular of the non-oil sector which is considered key to long term sustainable economic development. In this first session after the summer break we are pleased to have Mr. Vikas Papriwal (Partner KPMG) providing us with his views on the Economic Outlook for the region and the UAE in particular.
